LE SSERAFIM — EASY CRAZY HOT

In Spain as elsewhere in Europe, a K-pop album comes from South Korea, and the question is not whether it is available but which route it takes to reach you. An EU-based seller, a Korean retailer, a physical shop or another fan: each route has its own final price, delivery time and share of formalities. The gap almost never lies in the displayed price, but in VAT, in shipping and in what may be claimed on delivery. This guide describes those routes, what Spanish tax rules require, the special case of certain territories and the points to check before paying. pocabase lists 4,621 albums and 11,507 versions to compare before ordering.

Four ways to buy from Spain

The first route is a seller established in the European Union. The parcel moves inside the single market: it does not go through customs, nothing is claimed on arrival and the invoice already includes VAT. The second is a Korean retailer shipping internationally: the catalogue is complete and POB offers are plentiful, but the parcel enters the Union as a third-country consignment. The third is a physical shop, in practice a specialist bookshop section or an Asian culture store in the larger cities: the choice is narrow, but the album is available straight away.

The fourth is resale between fans, on marketplaces and social networks, through WTS and WTB (want to sell, want to buy) listings. It is the only route to a sold-out version or a specific photocard, and the only one where the seller has no professional obligations. Prices follow scarcity, not the original price. The first three routes sell a new, sealed product; the fourth sells a second-hand item whose condition you check on proof, a photo of the item next to the seller's username, before paying.

  • EU seller: VAT included, nothing to pay on arrival, narrower catalogue.
  • Korean retailer: full catalogue and original POB, imports to watch.
  • Physical shop: available immediately, no pre-order and no POB.
  • Resale between fans: the only route for sold-out items, no professional guarantee.

Spanish VAT: 21%

The general VAT rate in Spain, known as IVA, is 21%. It applies to an album delivered to an address on the mainland or in the Balearic Islands. Under the EU distance-selling regime the rate follows the destination: a German seller delivering to Madrid charges 21%, not 19%, and a Spanish seller delivering to France charges 20%. Where the seller is established does not enter the calculation.

Between two EU countries there are no customs duties. A parcel shipped from a European warehouse therefore arrives without formalities, with a single tax already included in the price paid. That is the main reason a European seller often costs less on arrival, even when its displayed price looks higher than a Korean retailer's.

A parcel from Korea: import VAT

Since 1 July 2021, VAT has been due on every parcel entering the Union from a third country, whatever its value. Before that reform, consignments under EUR 22 were exempt; that exemption is gone. A single album from Korea is therefore taxed at 21% on entering Spain, just as it would be if it had been bought in Spain.

Two mechanisms exist to pay that VAT. Either the seller collects it at checkout, through the EU's IOSS scheme for low-value consignments, and the parcel clears customs with nothing to pay. Or nobody collected it, and the carrier charges it before handover, along with a flat handling fee that weighs heavily on a single album. That is what pushes many fans towards a GO (group order), where an organiser, the GOM, gathers several orders into one parcel. Customs duties follow separate rules, which are being reformed for small parcels at EU level: check what applies on the date of your order.

Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla: a separate regime

The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are part of Spain but not of the European Union's VAT area. They apply their own indirect taxes, IGIC in the Canaries and IPSI in Ceuta and Melilla, instead of IVA. A parcel sent to these territories, even from the mainland or from another EU country, may therefore be treated as an import, with formalities and charges on arrival.

Practical rules vary by carrier and by the value of the shipment, and not every seller delivers to these addresses. Before ordering to the Canaries, Ceuta or Melilla, check with the seller, pocabase included, how the shipment is handled, which tax applies and who pays it. That is the only way to avoid an unpleasant surprise at delivery.

Delivery: ten to twenty working days from Korea

To Spain, as to the rest of the Union, allow 10 to 20 working days between departure from Korea and delivery, customs clearance included. A shipment leaving a European warehouse is far quicker, but it only covers references already imported. The clock starts at dispatch, not at the order. A parcel showing as in customs clearance for several days is not a warning sign: it is the normal rhythm of an international flow.

On a pre-order two further waits come before that clock: the official release date, then preparation at the Korean distributor, often a few days to two weeks on a large release. A pre-order placed a month before release can therefore arrive two months after payment without anything being late. Finally, make sure the address is complete, postcode included: a parcel from abroad is rarely presented more than once.

Pre-orders, POB and versions

A pre-order gives access to the POB, the gift offered by the retailer, and secures the chosen version before it sells out. POB offers from Korean retailers depend on the delivery region: the same album does not unlock the same gift everywhere, and some offers are reserved for the Korean market. An album page on pocabase lists the known POB with the retailer, the item and the deadline.

Before choosing a version, compare inclusions and weight: on an international shipment a photobook version and a jewel case version differ in bulk and in exposure to knocks. The number of photocards, and whether they are fixed or randomly drawn, are also on the page: useful for judging your odds of pulling your bias. A sold-out limited version only reappears on the resale market, at a price unrelated to the original one.

Frequently asked questions

Which VAT rate applies to a delivery in Spain?

21%, the Spanish general rate, for an address on the mainland or in the Balearic Islands. Under the EU distance-selling regime the delivery country sets the rate, not the seller's country. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla follow a separate tax regime.

Does an album bought in another EU country pay customs duties?

No. Between EU countries there are no customs duties and no formalities: the parcel moves inside the single market and VAT is already included in the price. This does not hold for shipments to the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.

Is a parcel from Korea taxed, even for a single album?

Yes. Since 1 July 2021 the EUR 22 exemption is gone and VAT is due on every parcel from a third country, whatever the amount. It is either collected by the seller at checkout or charged by the carrier on delivery, with a fee.

Can I have an album delivered to the Canary Islands?

Often, but the Canaries sit outside the EU VAT area and apply their own tax. The shipment may be treated as an import, with charges on arrival. Check with the seller, before ordering, how it handles these addresses.

How long does an album take from Korea?

Allow 10 to 20 working days from dispatch, customs clearance included. On a pre-order, add the wait until the release date plus a few days to two weeks of preparation at the distributor before the parcel leaves.
